Alan Murphy

I'm from Dublin but now live in "lovely Lismore" in west Waterford. Many moons ago I acquired a degree-level qualification in Fine Art and have since exhibited my paintings and collages in Dublin, Waterford, Sligo, Cork and Belfast, and published a few "serious" poems in journals here and there too.

“The Mona Lisa’s on our Fridge” was my first book and was sponsored by the Irish M.E. Trust (www.imet.ie). Although it was self-published It was reviewed by Robert Dunbar in the Irish Times as one of the best children's poetry books of 2009.

My second collection of verse, “Psychosilly”, was published in 2011. It was also recommended in an Irish Times supplement ("Must-reads for under 12s") and warmly recommended in UK journal The School Librarian. My latest extravaganza, "Prometheus Unplugged!", is now available for purchase (see below and on our shop page). It was on an Irish Times children's and young adults' books of the year list at the end of 2014.

In my capacity as 'wacky rhymester' I have given many public readings at the Electric Picnic, the West Cork Literary Festival, the Mountains To Sea Festival, Poetry Now, Ireland's Children's Book Festival (2010, 2011 and 2012), Waterford Writers Weekend, Lismore's Immrama festival and Phizzfest.

"The poems in Alan Murphy’s third collection, Prometheus Unplugged, exhibit a new assurance... Myth and music chime harmoniously in verses where ancient Greek meets ageing rocker and where the encounters resound with literary echoes.
- Robert Dunbar, The Irish Times

"Murphy’s poetry manages to be both funny and thought-provoking and very contemporary. Great fun."
- Nessa O'Mahony, Children's Books Ireland Recommended Reads

"Filled with endless clever and original thought, imaginative word play, musical language, and rock and roll references."
- Anastasia Gonis, Buzz Words Magazine Online
